Penn State Chapter Participates in PRSSA THON

December 9, 2010

Raises $6,949 in Two Days “For the Kids”

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. — Penn State’s PRSSA THON Committee is proud to announce that they raised $6,949.16 during the first official THON canning weekend in October. Chapter members surpassed last year’s PRSSA canning-weekend totals combined. Approximately 30 Committee members spread their efforts across Pennsylvania in the West Chester, York and Harrisburg areas to encourage local community members to help Penn State fight pediatric cancer.

“We don’t typically set a monetary goal when heading into canning weekends simply to remind our members that we are in this ‘For the Kids,’” Brittany Thrush,  Penn State THON co-chair said. “When I realized how much money we did raise, I was absolutely blown away.

According to Krystin Arrabito, Penn State THON co-chair, more than $300 dollars was raised in pennies alone. “Canning trips such as this one are important for many other reasons besides just raising money,” said Arrabito. “It’s such a great bonding experience for our members — the strong relationships established during these weekends combine to make one powerful committee.”

Last year, Penn State’s PRSSA THON Committee raised $20,936.39, more than the committee had ever raised in previous years. Thus far, after the THON 5K and alternative fundraisers, the THON Committee has already collected nearly half this amount, proudly announcing their current total of $7,684.16 dollars.

“We wake up at 6 a.m. and stand in the cold all day long because it’s the least we can do for the kids who are fighting unbelievable battles,” Arrabito said. “We're there to help them fight, and I don't think there is anything more powerful than that.

The PRSSA THON Committee is hoping for similar results during the first weekend in December.
