February 6, 2014
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 6, 2014) – Gary McCormick, APR, Fellow PRSA, the director of partnership development for HGTV, spoke to more than 100 attendees at the University of Florida’s Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
McCormick discussed the value of networking and emphasized how making connections with other professionals is crucial for career development. He explained that developing a strong network can act as a lifeline to finding a job.
“Everybody knows networking is key,” said Chad Furst, the assistant managing director of UF PRSSA’s student-run firm, Alpha PRoductions. “Mr. McCormick opened our eyes to just how many opportunities to network stem from an organization like PRSSA.”
McCormick’s next piece of advice was simply put, “Get mentors and use them,” he said.
He emphasized how building meaningful relationships with mentors can provide the opportunity for long-lasting personal growth. UF PRSSA’s new mentorship program, beginning this spring, will allow experienced PRSSA members to mentor one or two new members.
UF PRSSA members also had the opportunity to directly interact with McCormick via Twitter. Members used the Chapter’s hashtag “#yourPRSSA” to aggregate questions for him to respond to during his presentation. The hashtag was trending locally by the end of the night.
Before working with HGTV, McCormick served as the public relations director at DIY and Fine Living TV Network, where he managed media relations and special events. Prior to joining Scripps Network, he dedicated 17 years of public relations and public affairs support to federal government clients. McCormick served as the Chair and CEO of PRSA in 2010 and the president of the PRSA Foundation in 2006 and 2007.
Many of McCormick’s tips for success resonated with members, as seen on Twitter. @EitanSchapsis tweeted, “Great speech by put on by. Awesome career advice for up and rising PR professionals.”
