WVU PRSSA Hosts Professional Development Workshop

December 19, 2014

MORGANTOWN, WV (Dec. 19, 2014) Members of the WVU PRSSA Chapter hosted WVU’s first professional development workshop for students interested in preparing for future careers and internships.

There were 36 students in attendance from a diverse range of majors and professional fields. Each student received personal attention from professionals from the WVU Career Services Center, FleishmanHillard, Taylor, Sherpa Software, National Parks and Conservation and the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). The professionals conducted interviews and provided students feedback on their interviews, resumes, cover letters and digital portfolios.

“I’m glad I participated in the workshop. I learned that I already knew a lot about myself – I just didn’t know how to consider a trait, such as curiosity, a strength,” PRSSA member Lucy Sutton said. “The workshop helped reassure me that I am going in the right direction, but it also provided many valuable, clear-cut tips that will help me advance to my future career.”

The day began at 10 a.m. with StrengthQuest testing, an online professional assessment aiming to make the most of respondents’ talents to further their careers. Next, a working lunch session gave students one-on-one work content review and guidance from professionals. There was also a presentation about the importance of having a LinkedIn profile, followed by 30-minute mock interview sessions via Skype with industry professionals. Finally, professional headshots of each student were taken for their LinkedIn profiles.
