Broadway star Stephanie J. Block headlines autism awareness fundraiser at Montclair State University

June 9, 2015

MONTCLAIR, NJ (June 9, 2015) --- For the second year in a row, the Public Relations Student Society of America at Montclair State University brought out one of Broadway’s biggest stars to headline its annual benefit for Autism New Jersey. Tony nominee Stephanie J. Block, who starred as Elphaba in the long-running Broadway musical Wicked topped this year’s lineup, which raised $3,000 for the statewide autism advocacy organization.  The May 4 event also featured the talents of Comedian Sunda Croonquist, psychic illusionist Manlow, sixth grader Jodi DiPiazza, and the MSU Encore freshman musical theater majors.

The Centers for Disease Control released a report showing 1-in-68 children nationally have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  This newest estimate is based on the CDC's evaluation of health and educational records of all 8-year-old children in 2010 across 11 states, including New Jersey.  New Jersey has the highest rates, with 1 in 45 children and 1 in 28 boys.  The national rate marks an increase of 30% from the previous 1 in 88 statistic.

This was Montclair State University PRSSA’s fourth annual benefit for autism. Tony award winner Laura Benanti starred in last year’s event, and the 2013 featured guest was film star Moira Kelly.
