USM PRSSA Contributes to More Than 4,000 Service Hours in Hattiesburg, Mississippi

April 18, 2016

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (April 18, 2016) — The University of Southern Mississippi Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) was among 1,000 students who united for The Big Event, an annual day of service on Saturday, April 2.

Hosted by the USM Student Government Association (SGA), the event attracted record-breaking numbers, increasing their average participation of approximately 700 students. In addition to thousands of volunteers, the SGA added a canned food drive encouraging participants to take their service a step further. Organizations were paired together and sent to service sites in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and surrounding areas.

Dr. Eddie Holloway, USM dean of students kicked off the day of service with an inspirational speech igniting students to disperse into the community with enthusiasm while representing the university.

“We are Hattiesburg and Hattiesburg is USM,” said Holloway.

USM PRSSA worked with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority at Oak Grove Upper Elementary. Students assisted with agriculture and art projects in the school’s classrooms, garden and animal farm, completing activities including potting plants, feeding animals, updating bulletin boards and preparing materials to ensure safety during instruction.

The Big Event is a national service initiative that began at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical  University in 1982. According to the University, it has since become the largest one-day student-run service project in the country. For more information on the event visit www.bigevent.tamu.edu.
